A man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of a Charleston man in 2022. Mike’o Wooton, 21, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced on July 25, 2023, according to Kanawha County court records. Wooton was one of two individuals accused of the shooting death of Keyshawnta St. John, 21, in March 2022.

The incident occurred when the Charleston Police Department responded to a shooting at a home on Bigley Avenue. St. John was found in a bedroom with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. St. John’s father, who was also present at the time, reported hearing gunshots and seeing a Black male wearing a green jacket and carrying a firearm fleeing the scene.

Authorities conducted a search and discovered Wooton inside a vehicle parked across from the crime scene. Numerous firearms were found in the vehicle, along with a green jacket. Another individual, Davone Lee Foote, Jr., was also apprehended walking in the area. Foote allegedly admitted to being present at the home and claimed that Wooton had produced a firearm and shot St. John multiple times.

Foote also confessed to possessing a firearm during the incident, which matched the description given by St. John’s father. According to Foote, he and Wooton had attempted to flee the scene in the vehicle, but it would not start.

The sentencing of Wooton brings some closure to the tragic murder case, but it is a reminder of the devastating impact that gun violence can have on communities. The loss of a young life is always a tragedy, and it is important for law enforcement to thoroughly investigate such incidents and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

While this case has reached a resolution with Wooton’s sentencing, it serves as a sobering reminder of the need for continued efforts to prevent gun violence and promote community safety..
