Emergency services responded to the scene at approximately 7:12 a.m. after reports of a pedestrian down on the Northbound 405 Freeway near Ventura Boulevard. Despite the efforts of the Los Angeles Fire Department, Mullarney was declared dead at the scene.

The California Highway Patrol issued a SIG-ALERT for the affected lanes and the Ventura Boulevard off-ramp to allow for investigation and clean-up. It is believed that Mullarney may have been struck by a hit-and-run vehicle while walking in or near traffic. Initial reports suggested a possible description of the vehicle as a Toyota, but further investigation ruled it out as being involved in the collision.

The identities of the occupants of the vehicle that struck Mullarney, as well as further details about the vehicle itself, have not been released at this time. The cause of Mullarney’s death has been determined to be traumatic injuries from being hit by a car, according to the LA County Medical Examiner.
