At approximately 3:21 p.m., Indiana State Police were called to the scene to investigate the crash, which occurred during the pursuit. The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department received information that a stolen 1997 Dodge Dakota from Vigo County was heading south on U.S. 41. Deputies attempted to stop the truck, but the driver refused to comply and continued south on the highway. The pursuit ended when the driver collided with another vehicle in Knox County.

Preliminary investigation revealed that all three juvenile passengers in the stolen vehicle were reported missing from Vigo and Owen counties. The 16-year-old male driver of the Dodge Dakota was approaching the intersection of U.S. 41 and Old U.S. 41 in Oaktown when he entered the right turn lane and attempted to make a right turn. However, the vehicle was traveling too fast and collided with the driver’s side of a 2006 Chevrolet Impala that was stopped at a stop sign.

Tragically, the driver of the Chevrolet Impala, identified as 88-year-old Jimmy Mayall from Oaktown, was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the stolen truck was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for minor injuries and was later transported to Southwest Indiana Regional Youth Village in Vincennes.
