Two people lost their lives on Thursday afternoon in separate vehicle crashes in Calaveras County, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The first accident occurred near Murphys at around 3:28 p.m., resulting in the death of a 35-year-old man identified as Jose Juan Villasenorespinoza from Bakersfield, as confirmed by the Calaveras County Coroner’s Office.

Villasenorespinoza was driving a 2003 Toyota Camry with two passengers west on Highway 4 at approximately 45 mph when he inexplicably veered off the roadway onto the north shoulder east of Utica Power House Road. He then swerved back onto the road, crossing into the path of a 2006 Toyota Tundra driven by Louis Sweet, 68, of Sonora, who was traveling east with three juvenile passengers. The Camry collided head-on with the Tundra, resulting in fatal injuries for Villasenorespinoza. His passengers sustained injuries and were taken to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto for treatment. Sweet also suffered moderate injuries and was transported to the same medical center, while the three juveniles suffered minor injuries and were picked up by family members at the scene. The CHP cited fatigue and/or distracted driving as possible factors in the crash, ruling out the involvement of alcohol or drugs.

The second fatal crash occurred hours later at around 5:28 p.m. on Little John Road in Copperopolis. Natasha Miranda, 38, of Copperopolis, was driving a 2014 Toyota Camry north on Little John Road at a high speed when she veered off the road and struck a power pole. The Camry overturned multiple times in a field west of Little John Road, resulting in Miranda’s ejection from the vehicle and her subsequent death. The CHP mentioned that Miranda was not wearing a seatbelt at the time. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, and the CHP is investigating whether alcohol or drugs played a role.

These tragic incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of safe driving practices and the need to remain alert and focused behind the wheel. It is crucial to avoid distractions and ensure that all passengers are wearing seatbelts to minimize the risk of severe injury or fatality in the event of a crash..
