Two civilians and a gunman are dead after a shooting incident in an Auckland CBD building on Queen Street. The shooter has been identified as 24-year-old Matua Tangi Matua Reid, who was on home detention for domestic violence and had approval to travel to the building site. The incident began when police received multiple emergency calls of a shooting from the second floor of the building.

Video footage captured the terrifying moment when police opened fire on the gunman inside the building. Gunshots can be heard while workers in high-vis jackets are escorted to safety by heavily armed police officers. Police Commissioner Andrew Coster confirmed a shootout occurred between the police and the gunman, resulting in three fatalities.

According to Coster, the gunman barricaded himself in a life shaft and fired at police, injuring an officer. More shots were fired, and the offender was found deceased. Two other individuals were found dead inside the building.

Over 40 people witnessed the shooting and sought refuge within the building. St. John ambulance assessed ten patients, with seven being taken to the hospital. Seven of the ten were injured by gunshots.

The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the community, highlighting the ongoing issue of gun violence. Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has assured the public that the Fifa Women’s World Cup, scheduled to take place at Eden Park, will proceed as planned.
