“Tragic Auto Crash Leaves One Dead, Another Injured at Union Landing Bluff”

One hundred years ago this week, a tragic auto crash occurred in the area of Union Landing Bluff, resulting in the death of one man and severe injuries to another. The Humboldt Times reported on July 20 that the two men, Harry J. Lynch of Westport and Fred Haas of Needlerock, were transporting market lambs to a shipping station when the accident occurred. The men had been working double-time and were exhausted. Lynch, who was driving, missed a turn and the truck plummeted down the bluff, crushing the men and the lambs.

In other news, the Oyster Loaf Cafe in Eureka was raided for the third time in a month by the dry squad. They confiscated wine and moonshine whiskey, and three men were arrested. The death of James A. Weldon in Freshwater was also considered suspicious, as he became violently ill after eating breakfast. The cause of death remained unknown due to the embalming process.
