A Missoula man has been sentenced to 25 years in the Montana State Prison, with 10 years suspended, for vehicular homicide. Bradley Keith Burgess, 38, was convicted for killing his passenger in a drunken wreck near Martin City last summer. The sentencing took place in Flathead County District Court earlier this month, with Judge Robert Allison handing down the decision. Burgess was also ordered to pay $11,900 in restitution and received credit for 317 days of time served.

During the trial, Montana Highway Patrol troopers described Burgess as having slurred speech and red, bloodshot eyes at the scene of the accident. Although he admitted to drinking alcohol that night, Burgess refused a blood test. However, authorities later obtained a warrant for a blood sample.

According to court documents, investigators determined that Burgess lost control of the pickup truck while traveling southbound on South Fork Road. The truck went off the shoulder and rolled down the embankment, resulting in the ejection of its passenger, Nicole Casaulong. Tragically, Casaulong was fatally injured after the truck rolled over her.

Burgess initially pleaded not guilty to the charge but later struck a deal with prosecutors in which he pleaded guilty. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to ask for no more than 25 years behind bars with 10 years suspended.

As part of his sentencing, Judge Allison recommended that Burgess undergo alcohol treatment while serving his prison sentence. This recommendation aims to address Burgess’s underlying issue with alcohol and promote his rehabilitation.

This case serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of driving under the influence. It also highlights the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and providing appropriate support for rehabilitation..
