A man has pleaded no contest to charges related to the shooting death of a 21-year-old in Lake County. Danny Kehm McCarty was originally charged with open murder, felony firearm, and two counts of police officer assault, resist or obstruct in connection with the incident that occurred in October 2022.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a residence on Harvard Street in Webber Township after receiving a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, they found a 21-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the head. The victim, later identified as Dylan Daniel, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lake County Prosecutor Craig Cooper stated that Daniel was a family friend of McCarty and would occasionally visit him at his home. Although they would argue often, Daniel continued to visit in an effort to help McCarty, who struggled with anger issues and a drinking problem.

The details of the incident remain unclear, but investigators believe that McCarty and Daniel were arguing on the night of the shooting. It is also believed that McCarty was under the influence of alcohol at the time. The exact reason for the shooting is still unknown.

At sentencing, McCarty faces a minimum of 13 years in prison and a maximum of 30. The plea of no contest means that McCarty neither admits nor disputes the charges against him but accepts the punishment.

The tragic incident highlights the importance of addressing anger issues and substance abuse problems. It serves as a reminder that seeking help and support from friends, family, and professionals can make a significant difference in one’s life..
