In a tragic incident that occurred last month, law enforcement officers were found to be justified in their use of deadly force in the shooting of a Minnesota prison guard in Star Prairie Township, Wisconsin. The victim, Tyler Abel, was shot and killed outside his home on County Road CC.
The incident began when St. Croix deputies and New Richmond police officers responded to a domestic incident call, where Abel’s wife reported that he had threatened to “bring his AR out.” The 911 call captured Abel shouting, “I’m going to bring my AR out and I’m going to get shot.”

Upon arriving at the scene, deputies discovered that the victim’s wife had managed to escape the house, but their children were still inside. Looking through a window, deputies saw Abel holding a hunting rifle. They attempted to negotiate with him, but he remained unrelenting and made threats towards the officers.
Eventually, Abel emerged from the house, pointing the rifle at law enforcement officers. In response, two officers fired shots, injuring Abel, who was later pronounced dead at the scene. It was later determined that Abel had actually pointed a break action pellet rifle at the officers.
The shooting was thoroughly reviewed by both St. Croix County Attorney Karl Anderson and Polk County Attorney Jeffrey Kemp, who independently concluded that Abel posed a clear threat to the police officers involved.
This incident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face in the line of duty. It also highlights the difficult decisions they often have to make in high-pressure situations to protect themselves and the public. As the investigations have determined, the officers involved were justified in using deadly force in this case. The incident will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on all those involved and their communities..
