On July 14, 2023, a fatal one-vehicle crash occurred one mile east of Rapid City, South Dakota. The driver, identified as 80-year-old David Burris from Rapid City, was traveling eastbound on I-90 in a 2016 Kia Sorento. He began to exit onto Box Elder when, for unknown reasons, the car veered off the roadway to the right and went through a ditch before coming to a stop in a small creek. David Burris was taken to Monument Health but sadly succumbed to his injuries. His passenger, 75-year-old Karlene Burris, sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries.
