A 40-year-old man from Makawao, Hawaii, has been charged and arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder after human remains were discovered at a remote trail in Kula. Carl Rackley is the third person to be arrested and charged in connection to the investigation, which began on July 5 when the Maui Police Department received a call about possible human remains.
Upon investigation, officers were led by hunters to the body of a 36-year-old man, later identified as Jonathan Awai from Makawao. On Thursday, John Joseph Smith, 58, and Stacy Marie Smith, 48, both from Makawao, were arrested in Kahului and also charged with second-degree murder in relation to Awai’s death.

The bail for John Joseph Smith has been set at $500,000, while Rackley’s bail is set at $200,000 and Smith’s at $100,000. All three individuals are currently in custody.
