A convicted felon, Michael Nikita Diggins II, has been charged with two counts of firearm assault and other offenses after allegedly shooting at two men behind a strip mall in Moreno Valley. Diggins pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The incident occurred early Thursday morning when patrol deputies were alerted to gunshots behind a strip mall near the intersection of Iris Avenue and Lasselle Street. Upon investigation, evidence of a shooting was found behind two businesses, but the gunman had fled the scene. Witnesses reported a vehicle stopped in the street near a bus stop, and the driver began firing a handgun.

Two men, identified as “R.R.” and John Doe, were allegedly targeted by the gunman. The motive behind the shooting has not been disclosed. Detectives soon identified Diggins as the alleged shooter and obtained an arrest warrant. Diggins was taken into custody without incident at a property on Badger Springs Trail.
Diggins, a convicted felon, is also charged with shooting at an inhabited building and being in possession of a firearm as a felon. He has prior convictions in Los Angeles County, although the specifics of those convictions have not been disclosed.
Diggins appeared before Superior Court Judge Gail O’Rane, who scheduled a felony settlement conference for July 26. He is being held at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta on $1 million bail.
