A woman has been arrested in Birmingham for the fatal shooting of another woman in the Norwood community. The incident occurred at an apartment complex on 17th Avenue North, where police found a 36-year-old woman lying on the ground, unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to UAB Hospital but unfortunately died the following day. The victim has been identified as Justina Wallace.
According to the police, the shooting took place during an argument between the victim and 23-year-old Aaniyah Nowden. Nowden’s child shares a father with one of the victim’s children, which police believe may have been a contributing factor to the dispute. Nowden and the child’s father were both detained at the scene and subsequently questioned.

Following an investigation, detectives presented their findings to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, resulting in a warrant being issued for capital murder. This charge is due to the shooting occurring in the presence of a child. Nowden is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
In a recent bond hearing, the judge denied a motion to set bond for Nowden, meaning she will remain in jail until another hearing in September. The case continues to be ongoing, with both the prosecution and defense presenting arguments.
The tragic incident highlights the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully and the devastating consequences that can arise from gun violence. The community mourns the loss of Justina Wallace, and her death serves as a reminder of the need for increased efforts to prevent such acts of violence..
