A tragic dispute among housemates in Novato has resulted in the death of a 47-year-old man named Ray Allen Mays. The incident occurred in the Lanham Village neighborhood and was reportedly sparked by a disagreement over housing arrangements.

Authorities were alerted to the situation when a call came in at around 4:30 p.m. at 49 Martin Drive. When police arrived at the scene, they found Mays on his back porch with apparent gunshot wounds. Tragically, he was pronounced dead on the spot. Additionally, Mays’ dog, Flex, was also found with similar injuries and did not survive.

In connection with the incident, one of Mays’ housemates, Paul Henry Dwight, 65, was arrested on charges of murder and animal cruelty. As of Monday, he remained in custody at the Marin County Jail without bail. Another housemate, Carlos Rodriguez, 47, was also taken into custody on suspicion of obstructing the investigation but has since been released.

The Marin County District Attorney’s Office is currently reviewing potential charges related to the case.

Mays, who had been running his own business called Amazing Ray Handyman Services since July 2021, was a former resident of Lakeport in Lake County, according to his social media accounts.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers that can arise from disputes among housemates.
