A tragic incident unfolded late Sunday night in Fayette County, Georgia, when a kidnapping ended in the death of a 19-year-old woman outside a high school in Clayton County. The Fayetteville Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a man had entered the Wingstop restaurant and taken his ex-girlfriend, who was an employee, at gunpoint and fled in a red Chevrolet Camaro.
Responding to the call, a Fayetteville police officer spotted a vehicle matching the description and began following it. The vehicle attempted to evade the officer, leading to a pursuit that crossed into Clayton County. Eventually, the vehicle turned into the driveway of Lovejoy High School, where officers executed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver to stop the vehicle and end the pursuit.

However, when the vehicle came to a halt, the suspect opened fire inside the vehicle and at the officers, striking their vehicle multiple times. Thankfully, the officers were able to jump out and take cover. They then repeatedly ordered the suspect to exit the vehicle, but he ignored their commands.
In response, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department deployed an irritant into the suspect’s vehicle, causing him to exit and allowing officers to quickly apprehend him. Tragically, the female victim was found inside the vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds and succumbed to her injuries.
The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Cameron Ja’Michael Hopkins of Albany, is facing charges of kidnapping and aggravated assault by the City of Fayetteville Police Department. The Clayton County Police Department is leading the homicide investigation and is expected to file additional charges.
