On July 16, 2023, a tragic head-on collision occurred on Newtowne Neck Road in Leonardtown, Maryland. The accident involved a black Kia Rio and a silver Dodge Durango, and resulted in the death of a 14-year-old passenger, Hunter Sansbury.
According to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, the preliminary investigation revealed that the Kia Rio was traveling north on Newtowne Neck Road when it crossed the center line and collided with the Dodge Durango at the crest of a hill. The impact caused the Kia Rio to roll over and come to rest on its side in the southbound lane. The driver of the Kia Rio, a juvenile male, was flown to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Dodge Durango was driven by Jacob Matthew Jones, with Taylor Lee Jones and a juvenile as passengers. All three occupants of the Durango were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The authorities suspect that vehicle speed and weather conditions played a role in the collision. The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating the incident.
