Maui police have made two arrests in connection with a body found wrapped in plastic in a remote area of Kula earlier this month. John Joseph Smith, 58, and Stacy Marie Smith, 48, both residents of Makawao, have been charged with second-degree murder.
The victim, identified as 36-year-old Jonathan Awai from Makawao, was discovered by hunters on July 5th in a remote trail off Keanuhea Street. Following the discovery, police were able to locate the suspects in Kahului and take them into custody.

John Joseph Smith’s bail has been set at $500,000, while Stacy Smith’s bail is set at $100,000. Both individuals remain in police custody as the investigation continues.
