On July 16, 2023, a head-on motor vehicle collision occurred in Leonardtown, Maryland, resulting in injuries and one fatality. The collision occurred on Newtowne Neck Road in the twenty-two thousand block. The involved vehicles were a 2013 black Kia Rio and a 2015 silver Dodge Durango.

The Dodge Durango was being driven by Jacob Matthew Jones, a 39-year-old resident of Glen Burnie, Maryland. Taylor Lee Jones, a 27-year-old from Glen Burnie, and a juvenile were passengers in the Durango. All three occupants were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Kia Rio was being driven by a juvenile male who was flown to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, a 14-year-old passenger in the Kia Rio, Hunter Sansbury, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the Kia Rio was traveling north on Newtowne Neck Road when it crossed the center line and collided with the Dodge Durango at the crest of a hill. The impact caused the Kia Rio to roll over and come to rest on its side in the southbound lane. Vehicle speed and weather conditions are believed to be contributing factors in the collision.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating the incident. They are urging any witnesses or individuals with information about the collision to come forward and contact Cpl. Vincent Pontorno.

This tragic accident serves as a reminder of the importance of safe driving practices and being mindful of road conditions.
