The crash involved a 2000 Dodge Ram traveling north on Route 11 and a 2001 Ford F-250 pulling a cattle trailer, traveling south. Tragically, the Dodge crossed the center-line and collided head-on with the Ford.

The driver of the Dodge, identified as 62-year-old Mark Alan Simpson from Fincastle, Virginia, was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The Ford was driven by 61-year-old Jeffrey M. Camper from Buchanan, Virginia. Both Camper and a female passenger were wearing their seatbelts and were taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, several cattle in the trailer sustained severe injuries and had to be euthanized.
