A Clearwater gang member, who was already out on bond for an attempted murder charge, found himself back in custody after a high-speed chase in a stolen car. Benjamin Sanders, 20, was driving a stolen 2022 Honda Accord when a detective attempted to pull him over. Instead of cooperating, Sanders threw the car in reverse and drove over a sidewalk and into a city park, knocking down a road sign in the process.
The chase that ensued reached speeds of up to 100 mph, with Sanders driving against traffic and showing a wanton disregard for human life, according to the arrest report. Eventually, deputies followed him to an apartment complex where he was seen getting into the back seat of another car. Sanders was then taken into custody and charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, fleeing or eluding police, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, and driving on a suspended license.

What makes this incident even more alarming is the fact that Sanders was out on bond at the time and was wearing an ankle monitor. In December 2021, he and another member of the “Betty Lane Boyz” gang, Brian Campbell, were accused of shooting a man nine times in a Clearwater parking lot. DNA evidence later linked both Sanders and Campbell to the shooting, and Sanders was charged with first-degree attempted murder in August 2022.
This recent high-speed chase and arrest highlight the ongoing issue of repeat offenders and the challenges faced by law enforcement in dealing with them. Despite being out on bond and wearing an ankle monitor, Sanders clearly had no regard for the law or the potential consequences of his actions. It serves as a reminder that more needs to be done to address the root causes of criminal behavior and ensure the safety of the community..
