Health officials in southwestern British Columbia have issued a warning about the toxic death cap mushroom after a young child consumed part of one. The Ministry of Health stated that these poisonous mushrooms have been appearing early in urban areas. Fortunately, the child only consumed a small part and was treated and is now doing fine.

Death caps, scientifically known as Amanita phalloides, are not native to British Columbia and are believed to have been brought to the province on the roots of residential street trees. They typically surface during wetter fall months but can also appear in the summer, especially in areas that are regularly watered.

These mushrooms contain toxins that target the liver and kidney. Symptoms can appear within six to 12 hours of ingestion and include cramping, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. The danger lies in the fact that after 24 hours, a person may start feeling better, but the toxins continue to cause damage to vital organs. A second wave of symptoms can occur within 72 hours, leading to severe illness, organ failure, and potentially death.

Health officials are urging people to collect and dispose of any mushrooms on the ground in areas where children may play. It is also important not to consume any mushrooms that have been properly identified as edible.

If someone consumes part of an unknown wild mushroom, B.C.’s drug and poison center recommends collecting the entire mushroom, including its base, or taking detailed photos of it. If there is a suspicion of mushroom poisoning, it is crucial to call poison control immediately at 1-800-567-8911.

This warning serves as a reminder of the importance of being cautious when it comes to consuming wild mushrooms. It is crucial to have proper knowledge and identification skills before consuming any mushrooms found in the wild..
