A tragic accident that claimed the lives of 10 people occurred on Friday evening in Ilorin, according to a statement by the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Frederick Ogidan. The accident was caused by wrong overtaking and speed violation, involving three vehicles – a petroleum tanker, a Toyota Corolla car, and a Volkswagen Sharan bus. The tanker, belonging to DANMARNA Petroleum Ltd, collided with the other vehicles, resulting in the loss of seven male adults, one female adult, and two female children.
In addition to the fatalities, several others sustained injuries ranging from bruises to cuts. The injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) mortuary. The police officers from Jebba Divisional Unit have taken custody of the vehicles involved in the accident.

Ogidan expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and advised motorists to exercise caution while driving. He emphasized the need for drivers to be mindful of their speed and to avoid risky overtaking maneuvers. To ensure road safety, the FRSC will commence another round of enforcement on speed violation and overloading from Monday, July 17.
Ogidan concluded by stating, “We cannot tolerate a situation where 10 lives are lost in a single crash.” This tragic accident serves as a reminder of the importance of obeying traffic rules and regulations.
