An Anderson man, Carl Roy Webb Boards II, who was previously charged with killing an Elwood police officer during a traffic stop, now faces four additional counts and several amended counts, according to court documents filed earlier this month. The incident occurred on July 31, 2022, when 43-year-old Boards allegedly fired multiple rounds at 24-year-old Noah Shahnavaz during a traffic stop, resulting in Shahnavaz’s death.

The new charges against Boards include attempted obstruction of justice, possession of cocaine, a misdemeanor drug charge, and a misdemeanor charge of operating a vehicle with a controlled substance in his blood. Additionally, several of Boards’ charges have been amended, including unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a felony firearm enhancement, a habitual offender count, a count for life without parole, and a count for a request for the death sentence.

According to the court documents, Boards intentionally attempted to alter or remove evidence related to the case, specifically a song authored by Boards. The documents also allege that Boards possessed cocaine, marijuana, and delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) during the incident.

Prosecutor Rodney J. Cummings argues in the documents that Boards is a habitual offender, with multiple prior unrelated felonies, including unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of cocaine or a narcotic drug, criminal recklessness, resisting law enforcement, carrying a handgun without a license, and possession of a controlled substance.

The documents request that Boards be sentenced to life without parole and that a death sentence be considered in this case. A pretrial conference is scheduled for Tuesday, and a jury trial is set for January 2025.

These new charges and amended counts reflect the seriousness of the crime and the potential consequences that Boards now faces. The court proceedings will determine the outcome and the appropriate punishment for his alleged actions..
