William Headbird, a resident of Cass Lake, Minnesota, has been sentenced to 234 months in prison for second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Diego Gasca in July 2021. Headbird, 47, pleaded guilty to the charges of ineligible possession of a firearm and second-degree murder.

The incident occurred on July 5, 2021, when the Cass County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a man being shot near Basswood Avenue and Fourth Street Northwest in Cass Lake. Upon arrival, deputies found Diego Gasca lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. Gasca was pronounced dead at Cass Lake Hospital.

During the investigation, law enforcement discovered that a large gathering had taken place in Cass Lake, which started on the afternoon of July 4 and lasted into the early morning hours of July 5. Witnesses at the scene identified William Headbird as one of the males present at the party.

Witnesses reported that shortly after an altercation, a car pulled up at the intersection of Basswood Avenue and Fourth Street NW, and multiple shots were fired from the vehicle. The vehicle then fled the scene, while Gasca stumbled and fell after being shot.

After locating the suspect’s vehicle and gathering DNA evidence, it was determined that William Headbird was the shooter. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and sentenced to 234 months in prison.
