A Vermilion Parish man was recently arrested on assault charges that were related to a shooting incident involving his son. The incident occurred near Maurice, Louisiana, when the complainant drove up to a stop sign at Leblanc and Odessa Road. Cory Verret Sr., the father of Cory Verret Jr., allegedly ran out of his residence and yelled at the complainant to stop his truck. However, the complainant chose to drive away.

As the complainant was driving away, a pickup truck started tailgating him from behind. This pickup truck was driven by Verret Sr. As they approached the intersection of Hwy. 343 and Hwy. 92, Verret Sr. swerved into the opposite lane of the complainant’s truck and allegedly threw a 2-inch pocket knife at them. Verret Sr. then passed the complainant and abruptly slammed on his brakes. Fearing for his safety, the complainant turned around and headed in the opposite direction, but Verret Sr. continued to tailgate him for a few miles.

The complainant contacted the authorities and informed them that he had been involved in an incident the night before with Verret’s son, Cory Verret Jr. As a result, Cory Verret Sr. was arrested and charged with intimidating a witness, aggravated assault, and aggravated obstruction of the highway.

This incident highlights the importance of maintaining calm and resolving conflicts peacefully. Resorting to violence or aggressive behavior not only puts others at risk but can also lead to serious legal consequences. It is crucial to find constructive ways to address conflicts and disagreements, such as communication, compromise, or involving the proper authorities when necessary.

Law enforcement agencies, like the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office, play a vital role in ensuring public safety and holding individuals accountable for their actions.
