“Santa Clarita Man Shot by Deputies Dies: Greg Covey Identified as Victim”

A 24-year-old man from Santa Clarita, California, who was shot by deputies on the Fourth of July, has died, according to officials from the L.A. County Coroner’s Office. The man, identified as Greg Covey, was allegedly involved in another shooting earlier that evening.

The incident occurred when Santa Clarita Station deputies spotted a vehicle matching the description of a vehicle involved in a shooting in Canyon Country just an hour before. When deputies approached the vehicle, Covey, who was in the front passenger seat, fled on foot. A foot pursuit ensued, during which deputies determined that Covey was armed. A deputy-involved shooting occurred during the pursuit, and Covey was struck by gunfire.

He was immediately transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries on July 6.

Two other men have been arrested in connection with the earlier shooting in Canyon Country. Jaime Gutierrez, 33, from Newhall, was arrested for attempted murder, while 19-year-old Angel Aguero was taken into custody on charges of attempted murder.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. No further details have been released regarding the motive behind the initial shooting or the events leading up to the deputy-involved shooting.
