Sheriff Darrell Dix disclosed that an “ongoing lover’s quarrel” seemed to be the motive behind the incident, although specific details were not provided. As Gilbert approached the suspects, one of them, Sydney Maughon, allegedly shot him multiple times before they fled the scene, leaving Gilbert’s lifeless body behind.
Detectives were able to trace a cell phone number belonging to one of the suspects, leading them to a neighboring county. Local authorities found a vehicle believed to have been used in the crime, with a gun discovered during a search.
All three teenagers, Maughon, Jeremy Munson, and McKenzie Davenport, are now facing charges of malice murder, battery, and criminal trespassing. Additionally, Maughon and Munson are charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Sheriff Dix holds all three suspects accountable for the murder, as they had gone to Gilbert’s house with the intent to commit a crime.
As the investigation proceeds, it remains unclear if the teenagers have retained attorneys, and court records were unavailable at the time of reporting. The suspects are currently in pretrial detention.
