“Eric James Abril Escapes Custody After Roseville Hostage Situation, Leaving One Dead”

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office has announced that the suspected gunman involved in a hostage situation in Roseville, California, has escaped from law enforcement custody. The incident, which resulted in the death of one person, occurred on April 6. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Eric James Abril, managed to escape from the Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

Authorities have stated that they do not know what Abril may be wearing at present, but his last known attire was an orange jumpsuit. He is described as six feet tall, with brown hair and weighing 175 pounds. The shootout began when officers were serving a search warrant as part of an ongoing felony investigation. One officer was shot near Mahany Park at around 12:30 p.m., prompting officers to shoot back.

The Roseville Police Department joined the scene to assist after a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer was shot, leading to another gun battle involving officers from both Roseville and CHP, as well as Abril. During the incident, Abril took two hostages before eventually surrendering to law enforcement. Regrettably, one of the hostages, identified as James MacEgan, was shot and killed. The second hostage was identified as MacEgan’s spouse.

Abril sustained injuries during the shootout and has been arraigned on four felony charges, including murder, attempted murder of a peace officer, aggravated kidnapping causing bodily harm, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
