Four militants attacked a police station in Zahedan, a city in Iran’s Sistan and Baluchistan province, killing two security forces. The armed group triggered a shootout after trying to gain access to the police station. The militants were equipped with grenades, according to Alireza Marhamati, the province’s deputy governor.

Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard confirmed that the four militants were killed in the attack. The motives behind the attack are still unclear, and further investigations are underway.

In a separate incident, two men involved in the October 26 attack on the Shah Cheragh mosque in the city of Shiraz were hanged. The attack, which killed at least 13 people and wounded 30, was carried out by members of the extremist Islamic State group. The two men were publicly executed in Shiraz.

The attack on the police station and the execution of the perpetrators of the mosque attack highlight the ongoing security challenges faced by Iran. The country has been a target of Sunni Muslim extremists in the past, with the Shiite majority often being targeted.

It is important to note that these incidents occurred amidst ongoing protests in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini in custody. The protests, which have been the largest anti-government movement in over a decade, are unrelated to the attack on the police station and the execution of the mosque attackers.

The Iranian government will need to address these security concerns while also addressing the grievances of the protesters to restore stability in the country..
